Killing Cockroaches
His basic principle revolves around how your daily time is spent. He is generally referring to a pastoral position, using a business example:
"So, the moral of the story is this: you get to decide where your time
goes. You can spend it moving forward. Or, you can spend it putting out fires.
You get to decide. If you don't decide, others will decide for you. Then you,
too, will be stuck reacting to the urgent."
As the IT Manager for a smaller company, i 'kill cockroaches' every day. I don't consider it a detriment to my work-- as a member of any team (even if you are the 'lead' member [ceo] ) it is imperitive to accomplish the tasks that are at hand in a timely fashion, while managing the overal vision of the organization. Proper leadership knows when to delegate and when to get out the bug spray.
More importantly, our CEO wears more hats throughout the day than i care to count. If his job was split to allow him to concentrate on specific aspects of managing the company, the result would be 10 additional employees (20-30% increase) which would equal a significant increase in overhead cost.
My point is, that no matter what position you hold in life, the position that 'this is my job this is what i do, i won't do anythign else' doesn't provide for cohesive and productive teams(whether it be in church, business or household activities)
